BCBSM PGIP Program

Description:  PGIP (Physician Group Incentive Program) is an incentive program that connects physician organizations from across Michigan to encourage information sharing about various aspects of health care.  Program participants collaborate on initiatives designed to improve the health care system in Michigan.

Background:  In 2004, the Physician Group Incentive Program (PGIP) was established - the Physician Organization Gain Sharing Program, (POGS) began in 2006. Both programs were combined in 2007.
PGIP initially focused on chronic disease management and promoting generic drugs. A reward pool was created which BCBSM allocated 100 percent to PGIP-participating physician organizations. The POGS program provided an opportunity to expand the number of participating physicians, focusing on reducing service category costs.

As of May 2008, these programs included 35 physician organizations from across Michigan, including 6,415 primary care physicians and select specialists who are members of BCBSM's TRUST PPO network and provide care for about 1.7 million PPO members. These participating physicians represent approximately 64 percent of active primary care TRUST physicians (internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, and general practice) and 15 percent of specialty physicians in the TRUST PPO network.
